The Data Science Manager will lead the organisation's Data Science workstream by ensuring accurate and innovative use of data and defining the future scope and challenges of delivering emergency and other healthcare services for the South West of England; enabling the Service to respond rapidly and effectively to changes in patient care, demands, working practices, internal and external factors.

They will oversee the primary Data Science functions within the Finance Directorate, and oversee the use of information and data science for the wider Trust and work closely with partners.

The Data Science Manager will be pivotal in ensuring that the organisation is ready for the challenges it faces in the upcoming years, and providing meaningful mitigations and plans to continue to deliver high quality patient care.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide statistical insight about SWAST, including robust analytics surrounding activity and performance.
  • Act as leader for team projects, having responsibility for the delivery, and accountability for the technical work of the directorate.
  • Lead projects to design, develop, test and validate machine learning models and predictive systems to improve analyses.
  • Use mathematical, statistical and operational research techniques to effectively model and analyse a variety of statistical information, and make recommendations based on findings to improve operational, tactical and strategic business decisions.
  • Develop and refine data visualisation systems to present analytical results.
  • Make recommendations and determine impact of proposed strategic and operational changes using data-driven approaches.
  • Communicate findings to all levels of management and respond tactfully to challenge of assumptions and results.
  • Critically review work and analytical findings produced by the team and colleagues.
  • Work with local university and experts to validate new methodologies and proposed models; including writing proposals for additional funding.
  • Develop, contribute to, and challenge strategies and plans, proactively identifying and recommending improvement opportunities with quantifiable evidence.
  • Undertake regular and valued 1:1's, team meetings and career conversations.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to a Degree level or equivalent experience in a Senior Analytical, Software Engineer, Statistics, Mathematical or Data Scientist Role
  • A Level at C or above in mathematics, statistics, computer science or equivalent work experience
  • Proficiency in SQL
  • Proficiency in Python and/or R programming language
  • Extensive experience of producing, analysing and interpreting data information, with significant evidence of the underlying theory around data exploration, statistical inference and predictive analytics.

Desirable

  • Practical experience and expertise in conducting thorough data analysis, mining and modelling in a work environment
  • Practical experience with machine learning techniques, visualisation best practice, simulation, optimisation and advanced multivariate statistics
