Job Summary

The Statistician is responsible for gathering, analyzing, and interpreting a wide variety of data to support business operations. This role involves selecting data samples and analyzing collected information according to established statistical methods. The Statistician prepares reports, charts, tables, and other visual aids to communicate findings. The position requires 1-3 years of professional experience and involves independent decision-making that significantly impacts business operations.

About the Division of Hospital Medicine: The Division of Hospital Medicine at Michigan Medicine is a collaborative, dynamic, and rapidly expanding team comprised of over 140 faculty members, 45 advanced practice providers, and 45 operational, administrative, and research staff. We are dedicated to advancing the care of acutely ill patients across multiple hospital locations, managing a daily census of more than 320 patients. Responsibilitie

Data Analysis

  • Gather, analyze, and interpret complex datasets to inform decision-making processes.
  • Select data samples to gather necessary information.
  • Analyze collected information using established statistical methods.
  • Prepare detailed reports, charts, tables, and visual aids to present data findings clearly and effectively

Decision-Making & Reporting

  • Perform work that is varied and may be somewhat difficult in character, requiring evaluation, originality, or ingenuity.
  • Make independent decisions on matters of significance, within the scope of the role's responsibilities, and free from immediate direction.
  • Summarize, interpret, and present results in written, tabular, and visual formats to stakeholders.

Technical & Programming Support

  • Utilize information technology and statistical software (e.g., Stata, SAS, R) to manage and analyze data.
  • Develop and maintain database infrastructures to support data analysis tasks.
  • Conduct computer programming as needed to support data management and analysis.

Skills You Have

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in statistical programming and data visualization.
  • Ability to work independently and contribute to business operations significantly

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelors degree in a recognized field of science or learning related to the duties of the position.
  • 1-3 years of professional experience in data analysis, with a solid understanding of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures in the field.
  • Proficiency in using statistical software and data management tools.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate various courses of action.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and perform work that may require some level of creativity and originality.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Background Screening


Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
